Sedation Dentistry in Prairieville, LA

Have you been putting off much needed dental work because you’re fearful of having dental work done? Does the idea of sitting in the dentist’s chair make you break out into a cold sweat? If so, there’s a word to describe your situation. It’s called “Normal,” and there is no need to feel ashamed.

Would you be interested if there was a service that would allow you to completely relax, probably even sleep through your dental procedures? Well, there is such a thing and it’s called sedation dentistry.

Sedation dentistry, sometimes called sleep dentistry, provides us with a safe, comfortable way to treat our apprehensive patients in as little as one or two visits. This is a fantastic service that will completely relax you while you’re having any necessary dental treatment completed. While patients will show varying levels of consciousness during treatment, most people tend to fall into a peaceful sleep.

What does Oral Conscious Sedation Entail?

We’ll discuss your medical history to ascertain if you’re a good candidate for sedation dentistry before treatment. If so, then we’ll ask you to come to your appointment at a predetermined time so we can dispense the medication. You’ll need to arrange to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.

During treatment we’ll monitor your vital signs closely to ensure your safety. Afterwards you can expect to remember little, if any of the treatment, due to the amnesic effect of the oral sedative. You’ll also, most likely, sleep for most of the day.

Why do Patients Choose Sedation Dentistry?

Patients often choose to be sedated if they:

  • Experience significant fear/anxiety
  • Cannot comfortably sit in a dental chair due to pain or injury
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex or severe sinus issues
  • Have lengthy procedures that they would like accomplished in fewer visits
  • Have great difficulty being or remaining numbed with local anesthesia

Is Oral Sedation Safe?

Because the sedatives that we use have been closely studied for years, the medications present very little risk to most patients. There are very few side effects and the medication is safely reversible. If you’ve ever had any complications while being sedated, be sure to inform us so that proper precautions can be taken.

What is Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas), and How does it Work?

Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that may be used alone or in conjunction with sedatives. By itself, it allows us to relieve patient anxiety and to make you more comfortable, and it will decrease your perception to pain. While wearing the mask, we can vary the levels of gas that you inhale in order to increase or decrease the effect.

When used with a sedative, nitrous oxide allows us to more predictably increase or decrease the level of sedation. Another benefit of nitrous oxide is the fact that you may drive yourself to and from your appointment, as the gas is quickly eliminated from your body once the mask is removed.
